Introducing Lady Beck
Further Information

Lady Beck currently supports 17 artists through the provision of artists studios, across many disciplines including Fine Art, Textiles, Graphics and even Picture Framing. Studios are a mix of self-enclosed individual spaces and open-plan spaces, which range from £45-£170 a month. Additional studio spaces shortly to be launched include 3 targeted at collectives for £190 a month, which are roughly 4x5 Meters, as well as 2 that would suit individuals or could even be shared between two, which are roughly 2x5.5 meters costing £95 a month.

Lady Beck also operates as a functioning artistic venue hosting exhibitions, workshops, talks and screenings. The venue is primarily programmed by Assembly House’s team, but is also available to studio holders and to external hire. The project space has a capacity of 100 and is roughly 8.5x10m. Regular workshops include Silk Screen, Linocut and Woodblock printing as well as Life Drawing, and are run in partnership with Modes of Expression.

Assembly House is directed by Matthew Wheeldon, Mike Winnard and Lester Drake, all graduates of Leeds College of Art. Recently the team has expanded to six in order to manage the additional responsibility of running two sites. The new additions include Ellie MacGarry and Emma Hardaker as Programme Coordinators and Alex Millhouse-Smith as Marketing Coordinator. The team are all practicing artists and currently work for Assembly House on a voluntary basis. A key ambition of the organisation is to make strategic developments in order to grow to the point that staff can take a salary, ensuring its sustainability.

Both sites are primarily sustained through studio rents, whilst Assembly House also receives regular core funding from Leeds City Council's “Arts @ Leeds” programme to support public events, which is further supplemented by surpluses from studio rents and a mixture of other fundraising avenues.
